Hey, Hollywood! Hands Off Our Games!

Over the course of the last two decades, the world of virtual entertainment has exploded. Originally little more than text on a screen, they evolved in leaps and bounds from 8-bit blocks to fully-rendered humans. I'm honoured to say that I have been there for a large portion of the journey, and it is amazing to look at the progress. However, I was also subject to the expansion of the silver screen, and its growing gluttony. While we have had some beautiful films, we have also had some terrible ones, many of which stem from video game adaptions. I'm sure you can think of a few.

Proof that Satan has a sick sense of humour.

The above is simply one drop in a vast ocean of mediocrity. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider are but a few monuments to how truly awful video game adaptations can be. They are old films, I hear you argue. Even Angelina's jaunt as Miss Croft was way back in 2001! Surely we've improved since then? Well, that depends. The visuals may be better, admittedly, but the movie can still be just as weak, as seen in the long list of Resident Evil movies.

Now, I do like the film series. Just not when I think of them being linked to Resident Evil games. And sadly, they are, there is nothing that can be done to change that. Some filmmakers see the potential backlash behind such a project and can it. One such film would be the Halo film that was to be directed by Peter Jackson. I bet that would have been an action-packed adventure that would break the box office, but most likely a terrible game-linked movie. It doesn't really matter how great your story is, or how advanced your special effects are. They simply lack the choice and immersion that video games can offer.

Now, that is nobody's fault. You wouldn't blame an orange for not being an apple. All we ask is that you stop trying to dress the orange up, and we'll do the same. The video game industry is just as guilty of this crime, I'm sure you'll agree. We've all played at least one movie tie-in and, unless it was Spider-Man 2, it probably sucked. Hollywood, we just need you to take the first step. Please leave games where they belong: on the small screen. Just stick to cute kids movies, Oscar-laden dramas and adaptations of children's toys.

We'll even go to watch this if you do.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe some of you enjoy those films. If you do, please feel free to leave a comment and let us know! I'd love to find a shining diamond among the muck that is the adaptation franchise. Until then, I'm pretty set against the whole thing. Until next time!
