Minecraft 2.0! IT IS COMING!

Minecraft has to be one of the games of the last twenty years. It has sold over 10,000,000 copies on the PC version alone, not to mention the XBLA and portable releases. Gifted to us by the gaming company Mojang, this ever-evolving beast sounds terrible on paper: You play as Steve, a blocky character in an equally-blocky world. Your goal is, well, whatever. The game offers you complete freedom and that is its major strength. You break down trees to build wood, to build basic tools and slowly but surely work up to creating an impenetrable fortress. Or you could just as easily hop onto creative mode and design entire worlds in whatever image you see fit.

It kept growing, forever updating and being tweaked to give us a better experience. Enchantment was introduced, as well as new biomes and blocks. Texture packs were released for the world, allowing players to give themselves whatever experience they desired. Mods were also drawn in by the players, opening up an already expansive world into a realm of limitless possibilities. I used to play the PC version, but I migrated to the Xbox due to its easier connectivity to friends. But the PC is truly Minecraft's home, I don't think anybody can deny that. And it's all about to step up a level.

Minecraft 2.0 is coming, and soon. Hopefully within the next couple of months, we will get to see our familiar worlds explode into Notch-crafted yumminess. It's going to share similarities with the original Minecraft, but overhaul major parts of the game and introduce chests of new content. It's in closed beta right now, but it's only a matter of time until we get to lay our hands on it. I can't list all of the content without dribbling on about each of them, so I will highlight my personal favourites:

Diamond Chickens- Yes, Diamond Chickens. These magnificent creations lay diamonds and lapis instead of regular eggs. How fantastic is that? Oh, but they explode if you handle them wrong. And they're probably quite rare. But EXPLODING CHICKENS.

An artist's impression.

On the subject of chickens...

Chickens Do Not Like Being Watched- Seriously, that's a thing now. You eyeball the poultry too much, and they will cut you the Hell up. I think that my worlds are going to be very chicken-based. Goddamn, I love me some chickens.

They like to watch you, though.

And finally...

Floating Sky Islands- Everybody loves floating islands. Sometimes, if you wished really hard, you got little lumps of land in the sky. But now there are going to be entire islands that you can reach and build settlements upon. Now I can finally recreate Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword!

You should all be very hyped up right now. Come join me on the ceiling, we have cookies and Lionel Ritchie.

Full details on what to expect can be found here.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It has been brought to my attention that the above details could actually be an April Fools joke, and I now see that it most likely is. So please take what is said within the article with a pinch of salt. Or a truck-full. My thanks and apologies.
